Swiftly investigate death of Kalpohin SHS student – Eduwatch to police

The Ghana Police Service has been strongly urged by Africa Education Watch (Eduwatch) to look into the untimely death of a student at Kalpohin Senior High School as soon as possible.

After receiving an exemption, the ill student was reportedly left in the care of another student to be transported to the hospital.

Sadly, the student’s inability to arrange transportation caused delays in getting to a medical facility, and it is purported that he died there, at the Tamale Teaching Hospital.

Wednesday, Eduwatch released a statement in which it offered its condolences to the bereaved family during this difficult time.

The group emphasized that this incident represents the second known death in Ghanaian secondary schools in less than two weeks, with both deaths being attributed to what they believe to be inappropriate use of discretion by school administrators.

In addition, Eduwatch cited at least four additional incidents of a similar nature that have been extensively publicized since 2017, highlighting the critical need for in-depth inquiries and remedial measures to stop such incidents in the future.

We send our sympathies to the bereaved family during this difficult time. This is the second death in our secondary schools in less than two weeks that has been linked to the improper use of discretion by school administrators; at least four more of these cases have been extensively publicized since 2017.

“We urge the Ghana Police Service to expedite their inquiries into this regrettable incident.”
