Sulochana Latkar, 30 July 1928 – 4 June 2023, better known by her screen as Sulochana was a well-known Marathi and Hindi film actress who appeared in 50 Marathi films and around 250 Hindi films.

She was best known for her lead roles in Marathi films such as Sasurvas (1946), Meeth Bhakar (1949), Vahinichya Bangdya (1953), Dhakti Jaoo (1958), and Sangte Aika (1959), as well as her mother roles in Hindi cinema from 1959’s Dil Deke Dekho to 1995. From 1959 till the early 1990s, she and Nirupa Roy embodied the “mother” roles.

Sulochna died on June 4, 2023, in Shushrusha Hospital in Dadar, of a protracted illness and age-related problems.

In 1946, Sulochana Latkar made her screen debut. Sasurvas (1946), Vahinichya Bangdya (1953), Meeth Bhakar, Sangtye Aika (1959), Laxmi Ali Ghara, Mothi Manse, Jivacha Sakha, Pativrata, Sukhache Sobti, Bhaubheej, Akashganga, and Dhakti Jau are only a few of the Marathi films in which she starred as the lead heroine from 1946 to 1961.

Throughout her career in Hindi cinema, she frequently starred with Nazir Hussain, Trilok Kapoor, and Ashok Kumar. She stated in an interview that she cherished her roles as mother to Sunil Dutt, Rajesh Khanna, and Dev Anand.

In Hindi movies starring Sunil Dutt as the leading character, she frequently portrayed the mother or a close relative in Heera, Jhoola, Ek Phool Char Kante, Sujatha, Mehrbaan (1967), Chirag, Bhai Bahen (1969), Reshma Aur Shera, Umar Qaid, and other films.

Sulochana Latkar awards and nominations

Latkar was awarded the Padma Shri, a civilian honour, in 1999. In 2004, she received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award.

She received the Maharashtra Bhushan Award from the Maharashtra government in 2009.
