Sue Gray was born in North London to Irish immigrants who moved to Tottenham in the early 1950s. After joining the civil service straight out of school, she has risen in her ranks.
Though she is relatively unknown, she is highly influential. Oliver Letwin, a former cabinet minister wrote, “Unless she agrees, things just don’t happen. Cabinet reshuffles, departmental reorganizations, the whole lot — it’s all down to Sue Gray”.
She is currently the Second Permanent Secretary in the Cabinet Office, reporting to the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster.
During her career break in the 1980s, she got married to Bill Conlon in 1985. Together, they ran a pub named the Cove Bar in Newry, a border town in Northern Ireland. This was during the troubles.
Gray and Conlon have two sons named Liam and Ciaran.
