Townsend was born in Howth, County Dublin, the son of Irish model Lorna Hogan and English professional golfer Peter Townsend. Dylan, his younger brother, is also an actor.

Stuart studied acting at the Gaiety School of Acting in Dublin, where he had his non-professional theatrical debut in Colin Teevan’s Tear Up The Black Sail in 1993.

The following year, he had his professional theatrical debut in John Crowley’s True Lines, which premiered in Kilkenny before moving on to the Dublin Theatre Festival and the Bush Theatre in London.

He played Lestat de Lioncourt in Anne Rice’s Queen of the Damned (2002) film adaption and Dorian Gray in Alan Moore’s The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003). He directed the film Battle in Seattle in 2007.
