Universal Music Group (UMG) and TikTok have finally resolved their differences and reached a new deal that will see UMG’s song catalog and music videos back on the popular social video app.

The conflict between the two parties began on February 1 when TikTok and UMG could not reach an agreement on song royalties, leading to UMG’s music being taken off TikTok. The dispute was centered around TikTok’s refusal to accept UMG’s new offer for compensation.

UMG accused TikTok of unfair compensation for their artists and songwriters, leading to a standoff between the two parties. However, a recent announcement on UMG’s website confirmed that the rift has been resolved, and both parties are moving forward with their partnership.

In a statement on May 1, UMG announced a new multi-dimensional licensing agreement with TikTok that will benefit UMG’s global family of artists, songwriters, and labels. The agreement will provide improved remuneration for UMG’s songwriters and artists, new promotional opportunities for their music, and industry-leading protections for their content.

Sir Lucian Grainge, Chairman and CEO of Universal Music Group, emphasized the value of music and the importance of supporting the creative community in the new partnership with TikTok. The agreement marks a significant milestone for the African music industry, as artists like Stonebwoy, Yemi Alade, Mr. Eazi, and others will be returning to TikTok.

This development is particularly crucial for African music, as it will see the return of songs like “Akwaba,” the official song of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which were negatively impacted by the ban. The resolution of the dispute between UMG and TikTok signals a positive step forward for the music industry and the creative community.
