Stephen Ray Perry is an American singer and songwriter who was born on January 22, 1949. Between 1977 to 1987 and again between 1995 and 1998, when the rock band Journey saw their greatest commercial success, he served as their main singer. He also co-authored or wrote a number of Journey’s well-known songs. Between the mid-1980s and mid-1990s, Perry enjoyed popularity as a solo artist. Between then and 2018, Perry made sporadic appearances in music.
Perry moved to Sacramento in his early twenties to form a band with 16-year-old future music producer Scott Mathews, who co-wrote, played drums and guitar, and sang. Ice wrote original material and was poised for success in the music industry.
They recorded at the Record Plant studios in Los Angeles during the day in 1972, while Stevie Wonder recorded his Talking Book album at night. Ice disbanded after returning to Sacramento because the band had no management, Mathews was still in high school, and the recordings went virtually unheard.
Perry moved to Thousand Oaks, California, in 1975, and formed Pieces with Tim Bogert (who had previously worked with Jeff Beck), Denver Cross, and Eddie Tuduri. After a year and a half, the band failed to land a record deal and disbanded. Perry also tried out unsuccessfully for the role of Captain Beyond’s replacement, Rod Evans.
