American lyricist and composer Stephen Joshua Sondheim was born on March 22, 1930. On March 22, 1930, a Jewish family welcomed Sondheim into the world in New York City.
The composer grew up in Doylestown, Pennsylvania and Manhattan’s Upper West Side before moving to a farm there when his parents divorced. Since he was the only child of affluent parents who lived in the San Remo at 145 Central Park West, he was portrayed in Meryle Secrest’s biography as a lonely and abused boy.
With his works, which include “music and lyrics of unparalleled depth and sophistication” and “unexpected ideas that span far beyond the customary subjects,” Sondheim, one of the most important innovators in twentieth-century musical theatre, is credited with “reinventing the American musical.”
