The youngest child of Theresa (née Volmar, deceased 2008) and notable businessman and philanthropist Eugene Lang (1919-2017), Lang was born in New York City. While Lang’s father was Jewish, his mother was a Catholic of German and Irish ancestry.

Jews from Russia and Hungary were the emigrants that made up Lang’s paternal grandparents. His two older siblings are David, a former executive of REFAC, the business their father founded in 1952, and Jane, an attorney, and activist.

He graduated from Swarthmore College in 1973 with a degree in English Literature. Lang attended George School, a Quaker boarding school in Newtown, PA, and graduated from there a year early.

Manhunter (1986), Gettysburg and Tombstone (1993), Gods and Generals (2003), Public Enemies (2009), Conan the Barbarian (2011), The Girl on the Train (2013), and Don’t Breathe are some of the movies he is well-known for.

It has been revealed that Lang will return as Colonel Miles Quaritch in the future Avatar sequels.

He has had a long career on Broadway outside of these roles and was nominated for a Tony Award for his performance in the 1992 production of The Speed of Darkness.

In recognition of his work in James Cameron’s Avatar, he received the Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actor (2009). He served as the Actors Studio’s co-artistic director from 2004 to 2006.
