Former Black Stars captain, Stephen Appiah, is reportedly gearing up to venture into the political arena as an independent parliamentary candidate in the upcoming general elections.

The ex-Juventus midfielder is said to be joining prominent personalities like John Dumelo and the incumbent Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency, Lydia Alhassan.

The news of Appiah’s political aspirations was disclosed by the spokesperson of the Ayew family, Fiifi Tackie, in a recent announcement. Should he confirm his candidacy, Appiah will be following in the footsteps of other football icons who have recently delved into politics.

One of such figures is Asamoah Gyan, the all-time leading goal scorer for the Black Stars, who was appointed as the sub-committee chair of Youth and Sports in Dr Bawumia’s campaign committee for the ruling New Patriotic Party. In accepting the appointment, Gyan expressed his commitment to contributing his wealth of experience in sports to the political sphere.

Additionally, former Ghana Football Association (GFA) president, Kwesi Nyantakyi, also made headlines when he declared his intention to participate in partisan politics. Nyantakyi entered the NPP primaries for the Ejisu constituency but was unsuccessful in securing the nomination after receiving a low number of votes.
