Stephen Michael Ames, a professional golfer who previously competed on the PGA Tour and now competes on the PGA Tour Champions, was born on April 28, 1964. His greatest victory came in 2006 at The Players Championship.

Ames was born in San Fernando, Trinidad and Tobago, and is of English and Portuguese ancestry. A large portion of his family still lives there. Two times, his grandmother won the Trinidad and Tobago Championship. Ames grew up on the Petrotrin employee community at Pointe-à-Pierre (at the time known as Trintoc). At Petrotrin’s employee club, Pointe-à-Pierre Golf Club, he acquired his golf skills.

Early encouragement and guidance from his father, Michael, helped Ames’ golfing prowess grow. He established the Sandy Lane, Barbados course record with a six-under-par total of 66 in his Hoerman Cup debut at the age of 16 in 1980.
