Standard of Ghana football is low – Augustine Ahinful

Former Ghana international, Augustine Ahinful, has dismissed suggestions that Dreams FC’s performance in the CAF Confederation Cup indicates an improvement in the country’s football landscape.

The Ghana Premier League side recently made their debut in the CAF inter-club competitions and managed to reach the semifinals. Despite holding Zamalek SC to a goalless draw in Cairo, they suffered a 3-0 defeat at the Baba Yara Stadium.

In an interview, Ahinful emphasized that crediting Dreams FC’s success solely to the advancement of football standards in the local scene oversimplifies the challenges faced by Ghanaian clubs.

“Our football has regressed, that’s a fact we all know. Dreams FC, however, have performed admirably, and they deserve credit for their achievements. But to say this indicates an overall improvement in Ghanaian football is not accurate. There are various factors at play that need to be addressed in order to elevate our football to the desired level,” Ahinful told Graphic Sports.

Despite their exit from the CAF Confederation Cup, Dreams FC will be aiming to qualify for the continental competition again in the future. Their recent semifinal appearance marks a significant milestone for the club and highlights the potential for success on the international stage.
