The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, was left with no choice but to adjourn the sitting after only 24 Members of Parliament showed up for proceedings. The Minority had issued a warning earlier, threatening to disrupt parliamentary business if the Majority Caucus failed to attend.
During the proceedings, the Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh Dompreh, attempted to lay before the House the Ewoyaa Lithium and Bauxite agreement. However, Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, raised the issue of quorum.
Mr. Mohammed, standing on order 64, argued that the House did not have enough members to transact business. He criticized the Majority Caucus for consistently relying on the numbers of the Minority to conduct government business.
“It demonstrates a lack of seriousness. We could have also left this house, but we have decided to act responsibly,” he stated on July 15.
In response to Mr. Mohammed’s concern, the Speaker called for a headcount and subsequently adjourned the session.
This incident highlights the ongoing tensions and power struggles within Parliament, as both sides seek to assert their influence and protect their interests. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
