William “Smokey” Robinson Jr. is a singer, songwriter, record producer, and former record executive director from the United States.
Robinson founded and fronted the Motown vocal group the Miracles, for which he also served as chief songwriter and producer. Robinson led the group since its inception as “the Five Chimes” in 1955 until 1972, when he announced his retirement to focus on his role as Motown’s vice president.

Robinson, along with Linda Ronstadt, received an honorary doctorate degree and delivered a commencement speech at Berklee College of Music’s commencement ceremony. Robinson received a BET Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015.
Robinson received the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song from the Library of Congress in 2016, and Robinson was inducted into the Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame in his hometown of Detroit on August 21, 2016.In 2019, Robinson received the American Academy of Achievement’s Golden Plate Award, which was presented by Awards Council members Jimmy Page and Peter Gabriel.
