American singer, composer, record producer, and former executive director of records, William “Smokey” Robinson Jr. was born on February 19, 1940.

He founded the Motown vocal group the Miracles, served as its lead singer, and served as their principal songwriter and producer.  From the time it was founded in 1955 as “the Five Chimes,” he served as the group’s leader. In 1972, he announced his departure from the band in order to concentrate on his duties as Motown’s vice president. Robinson, however, made a solo comeback to the music business the next year.

Following the selling of the business two years prior, Robinson left Motown Records in 1990.

Robinson was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 and received the Gershwin Prize from the Library of Congress in 2016 for his lifetime contributions to popular music.

He was inducted into the Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame in 2022. Robinson announced his comeback with the release of the eponymous Smokey album in 1973, after a year of retirement. “Sweet Harmony,” a Miracles tribute song, and the hit ballad “Baby Come Close” were included on the album. Pure Smokey, Robinson’s second album, was released in 1974 but failed to produce hits. Robinson found it difficult to compete with his former collaborators Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, and former Temptations member Eddie Kendricks, who all had multiple hit singles during this time period.
