Sleep enough to stay healthy – Prof Akosa tells Ghanaians

Former Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Professor Agyeman Badu Akosa, has emphasized the importance of getting enough sleep for maintaining good health. Contrary to the perception of sleep as a passive state, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) technology has revealed that the brain is most active during sleep, consolidating information gathered throughout the day.

Speaking at the Graphic National Development Series in Accra, Prof. Akosa urged Ghanaians to adopt healthy habits, including getting eight hours of deep sleep with dreams. He highlighted that the absence of dreams indicated poor sleep quality, which could lead to health issues such as hypertension.

During his presentation on “Acting to prevent rather than cure diseases — The way to sustainable health”, Prof. Akosa shared tips for improving sleep quality. He advised maintaining the right room temperature when using an air conditioner, avoiding distractions like television while sleeping, and consuming traditional oils like coconut, palm kernel, shea butter, and palm instead of vegetable oils high in polyunsaturated fats.

Additionally, the foundation Vice-Chancellor of the University of Health and Allied Sciences, Prof. Fred Binka, emphasized the need for support in providing adequate healthcare facilities for the country.

To address sleep disorders, a comprehensive approach involving lifestyle changes, behavioural interventions, and professional medical assistance is recommended. Establishing a consistent sleep schedule, creating a sleep-conducive environment, engaging in relaxation techniques, limiting screen time before bed, and avoiding stimulants are some steps to improve sleep quality.

The National Development Dialogue Series, created as a platform for citizens to influence national policy without political affiliations, received commendation for its discussion on quality healthcare. Dr. Wisdom A. Tiwoto, a representative of the Minister of Health, praised the GCGL for leading the conversation.

In conclusion, prioritizing good sleep habits and seeking professional help when needed can contribute to overall well-being and health.
