John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has made a bold promise to address security concerns in the six newly established regions of Ghana if he wins the 2024 elections. The regions in question are Savannah, North East, Bono East, Ahafo, Western North, and Oti.

During his speech in Gambaga, located in the North East Region, as part of his Building the Ghana We Want Tour, Mahama emphasized the need for enhanced security measures in the newly formed regions. He highlighted the importance of taking proactive steps to guarantee the safety and well-being of residents.

Mahama outlined his plan to boost security infrastructure and ensure a swift response to potential threats by establishing military barracks in each of the six regions. He stated, “We are going to prioritize the completion of abandoned projects. All six new regions are going to have military barracks so that the Ghana Army will be present in all the regions. In addition, we are going to form joint military and police anti-armed robbery squads, with one of those squads stationed here in the North East to combat armed robbery.”

He reiterated the significance of peace and security for the effective functioning of society, especially in the context of a 24-hour economy. Mahama stressed that without security and safety, the government’s policy of a 24-hour economy would not be viable.

If Mahama emerges as the victor in the 2024 elections, his commitment to bolster security in the new regions through the establishment of military barracks and joint military and police anti-armed robbery squads could potentially have a profound impact on the safety and well-being of residents in those areas.
