At the age of 53, Serie A icon Sinisa Mihajlovic passed away.
Former Yugoslavia defender Mihajlovic played for Roma, Sampdoria, Lazio, and Inter until revealing in 2019 that he had been diagnosed with leukemia. In addition, he oversaw a variety of groups, including AC Milan.
His passing was confirmed by his family on Friday.
According to a statement from his family, Sinisa Mihajlovic passed away in an unjust and premature manner. “Wife Ariadne, with children Viktorija, Virginia, Miroslav, Dusan, and Nikolas, granddaughter Violante, mother Vikyorija, and brother Drazen in grief communicate the untimely and unjust death of their exemplary husband, father, son, and brother, Sinisa Mihajlovic,” the statement read.
After joining Roma in 1992, Mihajlovic became a mainstay of Italian football for three decades.
He played 69 times for the city club before moving on to Sampdoria, Lazio, and Inter Milan, making well over 400 Serie A matches overall.
After that, he made the transition into management, working first as an assistant at Inter before taking over as manager of Bologna (twice), Catania, Fiorentina, the Serbian national team, Sampdoria, AC Milan, Torino, and Sporting CP.
His most recent position was as mayor of Bologna for a second time. He was hired in 2019, then on September 6, he was fired.
In a press conference in July 2019, Mihajlovic revealed that he had been given a leukemia diagnosis, but he continued working for Bologna while receiving treatment.
He had a reputation for being a tough defender and is recognized as one of the top free-kick shooters in the game’s history.
With 28 goals, he continues to hold the Serie A record for free-kick goals.
