Jewel Kilcher (born May 23, 1974) is a singer-songwriter, actress, and author from the United States. She has four Grammy Award nominations and has sold over 30 million albums globally as of 2021.
Jewel grew up near Homer, Alaska, singing and yodeling in a pair with her father, local artist Atz Kilcher. She obtained a partial scholarship to the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan when she was fifteen, where she studied operatic voice. She began writing and performing at bars and coffeehouses in San Diego, California, after graduation.

Jewel began dating actor Sean Penn in 1995 after he saw her perform on Late Night with Conan O’Brien. He asked her to write a song for his film The Crossing Guard and accompanied her on tour.
After a 10-year relationship, she married pro rodeo cowboy Ty Murray on August 7, 2008, in the Bahamas. Kase Townes Murray, their son, was born on July 11, 2011. After nearly 6 years of marriage, the pair divorced in 2014.
Jewel Kilcher is the daughter of Atz Kilcher, the Discovery Channel’s Alaska: The Last Frontier star. Her three brothers all live in Alaska. Her first cousin once removed is actress Q’orianka Kilcher, well known for her performance as Pocahontas in director Terrence Malick’s Academy Award-nominated film The New World (2005), starring Colin Farrell and Christian Bale.
Jewel and her mother (who also worked as her business manager) have been estranged since 2003, and the singer has accused her mother of stealing millions of dollars from her.
