Sidney Poitier, a Bahamian-American actor who was the first Black man to win the Academy Award for Best Actor for the 1963 picture Lilies of the Field, died on January 6, 2022, from complications of dementia.

At the time of his death, he was 94 years old.

From April 29, 1950, through 1965, Poitier was married to Juanita Hardy. They nurtured their family in Stuyvesant, New York, in a Hudson River mansion.

Poitier began a nine-year romance with actress Diahann Carroll in 1959. Since January 23, 1976, he has been married to Joanna Shimkus, a Canadian former actress.

He had four daughters with Hardy, namely BeverlyPamelaSherri, and Gina.

Portier and Shimkus had two children, Anika and Sydney Tamiia.

Sydney began her acting career in 1998 and has since been on shows such as Grey’s  Anatomy, Hawaii Five-0, Chicago P.D., and Carter.

Poitier’s determination to follow in her father’s footsteps as an actor prompted her to enroll in acting classes. She graduated from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts with a bachelor’s degree in acting.

Gina, an administrative assistant, perished in a sad accident on May 27, 2018.

Pamela, like her sister Sydney, followed an acting career. Among the films she worked on were Liberty & Bash, Savannah, and The Jackal. She also works as a teacher.

Sherri is a chef, and Beverly is a jewelry designer for Poitier Henderson.

Anika is a videographer who prefers to work behind the camera.

In addition to his six daughters, Poitier had eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
