The First Black man to win Best Actor Oscar, Sidney Poitier has joined his ancestors. He passed away on Thursday, January 6, 2022, at the age of 94.

His death was announced by Minister of Foreign Affairs Fred Mitchell, prompting tributes from industry folks and fans across social media.

Sidney Poitier was known for Hollywood films like Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, In the Heat of the Night, and Lilies of the Field, for which he became the first Black man to win a Best Actor Oscar.

He starred in three films that addressed the issue of race relations, To Sir, with Love, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, and In the Heat of the Night, which was directed by Norman Jewison in 1967.

Poitier married twice, the first time to Juanita Hardy from 1960 to 1965. After a nine-year affair with actor and singer Diahann Carol, Poitier married Joanna Shimkus in 1976. They stayed together for the remainder of his life.

While announcing his death, Fred Mitchell didn’t detail the cause of Sidney Poitier’s death. However, many media reports suggest that Sidney Poitier died of natural causes.

UPDATE: According to the official document obtained by PEOPLE on Tuesday, January 18, 2022, the legendary actor died from cardiopulmonary failure.

It also listed that he had suffered from Alzheimer’s dementia and prostate cancer over the years and that Poitier would be cremated.
