Former President John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has thrown down the gauntlet to the Akufo-Addo administration, challenging them to show him and the people of Ghana the projects that have been executed with the loans that have been acquired.
In a scathing critique, Mr. Mahama asserted that there is a lack of tangible projects to account for the loans that have been secured by the current government. He went on to accuse the Akufo-Addo administration of burdening the youth of Ghana with exorbitant debts, jeopardizing their future prospects.
During a recent address in the North East region as part of his national tour to promote development, Mr. Mahama emphasized the dire consequences of the mounting debt levels in the country. He highlighted the fact that if the debt were to be divided among the population, each individual would owe a staggering amount, underscoring the extent of the financial burden facing Ghanaians.
Mr. Mahama also took aim at the government’s handling of borrowed funds, particularly pointing out the lack of visible infrastructure development in various regions, despite substantial amounts of money being allocated for such purposes. He expressed dismay at the absence of significant transformation in the North East region, despite significant financial investments in the area.
In a poignant reminder, Mr. Mahama drew attention to the fact that it is the younger generation who will ultimately bear the brunt of the escalating national debt, as opposed to the current leaders who may not be directly accountable for repayment. He warned that the burgeoning debt levels pose a significant threat to the future prosperity of Ghana, urging the youth to be vigilant and informed about the financial obligations that lie ahead.
As the debate over debt management and fiscal responsibility continues to rile the political landscape in Ghana, Mr. Mahama’s outspoken comments serve as a stark reminder of the challenges facing the country in navigating its financial obligations and ensuring sustainable development for future generations.
