Shokrollah Jebeli, an Australian-Iranian, died in prison in Iran at the age of 83, putting an end to his family’s two-year campaign to have him released.

According to Amnesty International, Mr Jebeli was detained in early 2020 and brought to Tehran’s notorious Evin jail while facing two different financial dispute charges.

In one case, he was sentenced to four years and six months in prison, while the second case was still pending.

Mr Jebeli was denied legal representation of his choice, according to Amnesty International, and the judge presiding over his second case asked that his freely chosen lawyer be removed.

Mr Jebeli had enlarged kidney stones, a history of strokes, sciatica in his legs, high blood pressure, and an umbilical hernia, according to Amnesty International.

They also claimed he had a stroke in prison in 2021.

Mr Jebeli’s cause of death is unknown, but his son told the ABC last year that he was concerned that his father might die in prison.
