On November 7, 1955, Shirley Rose Eikhard, a singer and songwriter, was born in Canada. Eikhard was born in Sackville, New Brunswick. In the 1950s, June Eikhard (born Marguerite Cameron in Moncton) and her husband, bassist Cecil Eikhard, began their musical careers as active members of a small neighborhood band called the Tantramar Ramblers.
Her greatest success in Canada and overseas came from creating songs for other performers, most notably Bonnie Raitt’s 1991 hit song “Something to Talk About.” She did have some success as a solo performer in Canada.
Eikhard successfully applied for the Songwriter’s Workshop at the 1969 Mariposa Folk Festival at the age of 13, following her maiden performance in Cobourg. She gave a performance there alongside Bruce Cockburn, Ian & Sylvia, and Joni Mitchell. When she was 15 years old, Anne Murray recorded her song “It Takes Time,” which went on to become a Canadian success. Kim Carnes recorded the song as well for her 1971 album Rest on Me. At the age of 67, Eikhard passed away from cancer in Orangeville, Ontario, on December 15, 2022.
