In the city of Sackville, New Brunswick, Eikhard was born. When both of her parents were prominent members of the Trantramar Ramblers, a tiny local band in the 1950s, her mother June Eikhard started her musical career with her late husband, bassist Cecil Eikhard.

Her family moved to Oshawa, Ontario, when Eikhard was a young adolescent. She received her first guitar when she was 11 years old, and at the age of 12, she had her stage debut at a fiddling competition in Cobourg, Ontario.

Eikhard successfully auditioned for the Songwriter’s Workshop at the Toronto Mariposa Folk Festival in 1969 at the age of 13 after giving her initial performance in Cobourg. Along with Bruce Cockburn, Ian & Sylvia, and Joni Mitchell, she performed there.

The song “It Takes Time,” which Anne Murray wrote and released when she was just 15 years old, later became a Canadian hit. When Earl Ball learnt of her rising reputation in 1972, he immediately signed her to Capitol Records.

Despite the record’s and its two follow-up singles’ dismal sales, she released her debut album, “Shirley Eikhard,” which went on to win two RPM Weekly Gold Leaf Awards in Canada. Later, several of her tunes were recorded by Kim Carnes, Anne Murray, and Chet Atkins.
