The Ghana Shippers’ Authority (GSA) has embarked on a proactive initiative to tackle the issue of high business costs at the port.

The aim of this initiative is to develop tailored value propositions for different categories of shippers, making it easier for them to access necessary services provided by the GSA while also cutting down on port and cargo destination expenses.

The Chief Executive Officer of GSA, Mr. Kwesi Baffour Sarpong, made this announcement during a Breakfast Meeting with Shippers that took place in Takoradi, Western Region, on Tuesday, 14th May 2024. This meeting was a strategic effort to strengthen the relationship between the GSA and shippers, with a focus on enhancing value throughout the cargo shipment and delivery process.

The gathering in Takoradi included individual sessions between the CEO and shippers, particularly those with annual import/export volumes exceeding $20 million and located within the Western Zone. Mr. Sarpong highlighted the economic importance of shippers and emphasized the need to prioritize their requirements.

As part of their strategy to create value for shippers at Ghana’s ports, the GSA is considering assigning Relationship Managers to certain categories of shippers. The overarching goal is to reduce port costs, apart from statutory expenses, such as clearance fees, container deposits, demurrage charges, and other avoidable costs.

Mrs. Agnes Asamoah-Duku, Head of the GSA’s Western Zonal Office, reiterated the organization’s commitment to engaging in open discussions with shippers to promptly address any challenges they may face.

The shippers present expressed their appreciation to the GSA for putting their needs first and promised to actively participate in the zonal Shipper Committees to contribute towards improving the sector.
