Shinzo Abe education: Where did Shinzo Abe have his education?
It was the first assassination of a sitting or former Japanese leader since a coup attempt in 1936, when numerous officials, including two ex-premiers, were killed.
The shooter started to fire from behind on Abe as he addressed the public on a drab traffic island in the western city of Nara.
According to Japanese media, the weapon seemed to be a handmade gun.
Doctors were unable to resuscitate Abe, who was brought to the hospital in cardiopulmonary arrest with no vital signs. He was certified dead five and a half hours after being shot at 5:03 p.m. (0803 GMT).
