A former Manchester councilor who served as Lord Mayor before her husband took over the position seven years later has died at the age of 87. Sheila Smith, who had been described by many as a pillar of the community who represented Openshaw Manchester council for over a decade, died at home on April 29.

She had been in the hospital before receiving home palliative care last month. However, the real cause of death hasn’t been determined yet. It comes around three years after her husband John died, who was also a Newton Heath councilor and served as Lord Mayor of Manchester.

According to Manchester Gorton MP Afzal Khan who responded to the news on social media, saying Sheila and her husband John were (East Manchester Labour stalwarts). The funeral will be held on May 24 at 10 a.m. at St Brigid’s RC Church.
