Rabbi Shalom Cohen was the most influential Sephardi rabbi in Israel from 3 November 1930 until 22 August 2022.
He was the rosh yeshiva of the Porat Yosef Yeshiva’s Old City branch and served as the spiritual leader of the Shas political party. He was the senior member of the party’s Moetzet Chachmei HaTorah rabbinic council from 1984 until his passing.
Shalom Cohen cause of death
One of Rabbi Efraim Hakohen’s eight children was Shalom Cohen. Sephardi kabbalist Rabbi Hakohen resided in Jerusalem.
His father had been an adherent of the Ben Ish Chai in Baghdad prior to his family’s move to Palestine in 1924.
When Shalom was born in 1931 in Jerusalem’s Old City, his father was appointed rosh yeshiva of Porat Yosef Yeshiva.

He wed Yael, a Safed kabbalist and Porat Yosef instructor whose father was Rabbi Mansour Ben Shimon.
They had eight kids together.
