A tragic incident occurred in Ethiopia‘s capital city when a residential building under construction collapsed, resulting in the death of seven people who were sleeping in a nearby house.
The disaster took place in Addis Ketema, a bustling neighborhood in Addis Ababa, early Wednesday morning.
Among the deceased were children aged four, 11, and 12, according to Nigatu Mamo, a spokesperson for the local authorities. Mamo stated that the victims lost their lives due to a lack of air.
Reports indicate that the police have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the collapse. This is not the first time such an incident has happened in the area, as in 2022, at least six people died and seven others were injured when a building collapsed in Merkato, one of Africa’s largest open markets.
Experts believe that poor-quality construction and weak regulations are likely responsible for these tragic incidents.
The community is left devastated by the loss of lives and is mourning the victims of this avoidable tragedy.
