The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to establish voter transfer centers on university campuses nationwide.
This move, according to NUGS, would ensure that all students have the opportunity to vote in the upcoming elections.
Citing Article 43 of the 1992 constitution, which states that “A person shall be registered as a voter if they are a citizen of Ghana and are eighteen years or above,” NUGS emphasized the importance of allowing students to exercise their democratic right to vote.
In a statement, NUGS highlighted the need for the EC to adhere to constitutional requirements regarding voter registration and polling station regulations. Specifically, they referenced Article 45, which stipulates that “A voter shall vote at the polling station where they are registered,” and Article 46, which empowers the Electoral Commission to make regulations for vote transfers.
By setting up voter transfer centers on university campuses, NUGS believes that students will not be disenfranchised and will be able to actively participate in the democratic process in the upcoming elections.
