
Sergio Mattarella is a politician, jurist, academic, and lawyer from Italy. He has been Italy’s president since January 2015.
Mattarella was re-elected in 2022 for a second term. During his presidency, he has worked with four, including Giuseppe Conte and Mario Draghi.

One of the first important positions that Mattarella held was the head of the board of arbitrators of the DC, reconstituted at the end of 1981 after the Propaganda Due scandal.
As a deputy, Mattarella joined the left-leaning faction of the party known as morotei. The faction, close to Aldo Moro, supported an agreement with the Italian Communist Party led by Enrico Berlinguer.
DC tasked Mattarella with “cleaning up” the party’s Sicilian branch from Mafia control in 1982. He was instrumental in passing legislation making Mafia-controlled building schemes illegal. He was re-elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 1987 with over 143,000 votes.
He currently resides at the Quirinal Palace in Rome, Italy. The palace is one of three official residences of the President of the Republic of Italy.
