Sending observers to monitor voter transfer has never happened, this is the first time – CODEO boss

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has made a significant decision by allowing political parties to send their agents to monitor the voter transfer exercise for the first time in history.

This move has been described as magnanimous by Albert Arhin, the National Coordinator of the Coalition for Domestic Election Observers (CODEO), considering that there is no law requiring the EC to do so.

During an appearance on the GhanaTonight show on TV3, Arhin commended the EC for their transparency and reassurance that the process would be conducted without any prejudice. He emphasized that this unprecedented opportunity granted to party agents demonstrates the EC’s willingness to ensure a fair and transparent election.

However, tensions have arisen following the rejection of the EC’s directive by the National Democratic Congress (NDC), urging its agents to ignore the EC’s instruction to recall them from its offices during the voter transfer exercise. The NDC has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of orchestrating a scheme to move voters from different constituencies to manipulate the electoral process.

In response to these developments, Arhin called for the intervention of the peace council to mediate between the parties and ensure a peaceful transfer of votes.

He warned that allowing the current discord to continue could jeopardize the upcoming election and undermine the democratic process.
