The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Mahama, recently paid tribute to the late former president, Professor John Evans Atta Mills.
Mahama, who previously served as Vice President under Atta Mills, commended him for being a nation-builder who prioritized unity and the national interest above personal or political gains.
In a heartfelt Facebook post marking the 12th anniversary of President Mills’ passing, Mahama praised him for embodying qualities of truth and honesty. He also highlighted President Mills’ gesture of cutting his own salary as a display of solidarity with Ghanaians facing economic hardships when they assumed office in 2009 after the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.
Mahama’s tribute emphasized President Mills’ dedication to the welfare of Ghanaians and his legacy of integrity and selflessness in leadership. Mahama described President Mills as a selfless leader who consistently put the country’s needs first, allocating resources to social welfare programs and uplifting the vulnerable in society.
President Mills’ reputation for transparency and integrity resonated both within Ghana and internationally, from his academic career to his tenure as the IRS Commissioner, Vice President, and ultimately, President. Mahama’s reflections serve as a reminder of the values and principles that President Mills embodied throughout his public service.
