The 45 King’s path into hip-hop began in the mid-1980s, when he initially took on the role of a DJ. His chosen alias, “the 45 King,” reflected his amazing ability to create beats from the often-overlooked 45 RPM vinyl albums.
The 45 King first became well-known in 1987 when he released the legendary breakbeat song “The 900 Number.” A mesmerizing loop of a baritone sax solo from Marva Whitney’s 1968 song “Unwind Yourself” was included on this track. Tuff City Records noticed his extraordinary talent and signed him that year, cementeding his status as a renowned hip-hop producer.
“The 900 Number” continues to be a pillar of his career, with numerous hip-hop artists drawing inspiration from its samples and loops. Beyond this, he was involved in the 1989 “Hustlers Convention” record on the UK label Music of Life, which is widely regarded as hip-hop’s first-ever live album.
