In two fiercely disputed rounds of voting, the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly was unable to produce a presiding member.
The 54 assembly members with voting rights were unable to provide any of the two candidates running for assembly leader with the two-thirds majority of 38 votes, despite a successful swearing-in ceremony that included the three Members of Parliament in the Metropolis.
Napoleon Agyeman, the assemblyman representing Kojokrom, received 31 votes in the first round of voting, while Patrick Brempoh, the assemblyman representing the Adiembra Electoral Area, received 22 votes.
The assembly members were lobbied before the second round of voting to support one of the two contenders in order to secure a prompt election of a leader so that the assembly’s business could begin, but the second round of voting likewise failed to elect a leader.
While Napoleon Agyeman was able to boost his vote total from 31 to 33, he was still unable to secure the necessary 38 two-thirds majority votes. Patrick Brempoh, the candidate, decreased his previous 22 votes to just 20.
Consequently, in compliance with the Local Assembly mandate, the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly has postponed the election of the Presiding Member for the next ten days.
Speaking at the function, Abdul Mumin Isaah, the mayor of Sekondi-Takoradi, urged the 54 assembly members to decide swiftly who would lead them in the best interests of the city.
