Piñera presided over Chile twice, from 2018 to 2022 and from 2010 to 2014. Under his leadership, Chile was able to place among the top countries for immunization rates while facing hurdles such as controlling the COVID-19 epidemic, effectively rescuing trapped miners, and responding to an earthquake.
But the brutal police suppression of 2019’s anti-systemic protests marred his legacy. According to UN investigations, there was improper use of force that resulted in torture.
There have been fruitless attempts to amend the constitution due to social discontent. Piñera passed away while recuperating from fatal wildfires.
Acknowledging Piñera’s efforts, President Gabriel Boric praised his democratic approach and crisis management skills.
