Sean Patrick Payton is an American football coach and former quarterback. He was born on December 29, 1963. From 2006 to 2021, he was the head coach of the New Orleans Saints, a team in the National Football League (NFL), and he led the team to its first Super Bowl victory in 2009. Payton was a quarterback at Eastern Illinois University and Naperville Central High School. He played for the Chicago Bears in 1987 and the Leicester Panthers in England in 1988.
Before becoming the Saints’ tenth full-time coach in 2006, he worked as an offensive assistant at San Diego State University and held a number of assistant coaching positions on college and NFL teams. Payton has always been known for his offensive prowess, scoring 2,804 points and gaining 40,158 yards in his first 100 games, more than any other team in NFL history. Payton held the record for the longest single-team tenure in the NFL among current head coaches, trailing only Bill Belichick, who has led the New England Patriots since the 2000 season.
