SDA church reiterates calls for election date change to accommodate sabbath observance

The Seventh Day Adventist Church in Ghana has recently raised concerns with the Electoral Commission, advocating for a change in the date of the upcoming elections to accommodate their religious beliefs.

The church emphasized the sanctity of the Sabbath and the importance of respecting diverse religious practices within the democratic process.

In a joint statement issued by the Southern Ghana Conference and Northern Ghana Union Conference of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, the leadership reaffirmed their commitment to observing the Sabbath while encouraging members to participate in civic duties.

However, they made it clear that church gatherings should not be platforms for political activities but rather for worship and spiritual growth.

With the election scheduled for Saturday, December 7, 2024, the church leaders have called on their members to carefully consider their voting decisions in line with their Sabbath observance beliefs.

The Seventh Day Adventist Church has historically refrained from participating in non-religious activities on the Sabbath, including voting.

Advocating for an alternative election date, the church aims to ensure that all citizens can exercise their democratic rights without compromising their faith principles.

The church leaders stress that voting on the sacred Sabbath day contradicts their religious convictions and seek a solution that respects the religious diversity of the population.
