The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) is under pressure from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to swiftly repeal taxes that the NDC views as burdensome.
The NPP flagbearer and vice president, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, made a deceptive promise to abolish some taxes if elected president, according to party general secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey.
During his inaugural speech to the country at UPSA, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia declared that if elected President of Ghana, he will do away with the electronic financial transactions tax, or e-levy.
On Wednesday, February 14, Mr. Kwetey asked Dr. Bawumia to fulfill his commitments now rather than waiting till after he is elected president, during a news conference held at the NDC headquarters in Accra.
“We in the NDC have always opposed the Draconian taxes imposed on Ghanaians by the insensitive Akufo-Addo-Bawumia government. Our gallant Members of Parliament have always stood on the side of suffering Ghanaians and businesses.
“Our advice to the Vice President is that if he has indeed turned a new leaf and seen the light like Saul on his way to Damascus, he should show repentance and apologize to Ghanaians and join the NDC to scrap the taxes now and not in the future.”
