When McNairy was 18, he moved to Austin, Texas, to attend the University of Texas at Austin. Wrong Numbers, written and directed by Alex Holdridge, won the Audience Award at the Austin Film Festival in 2001. Holdridge was hired to remake Wrong Numbers into a studio film, which never materialized. McNairy, who was interested in cinematography and photography, relocated to Los Angeles to attend film school. He stayed for a year before dropping out to work in film production, doing carpentry and building film sets.
