The Member of Parliament for South Dayi constituency in the Volta Region, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamkpor, has spoken out about the issues surrounding the Scholarship Secretariat, emphasizing that the problems extend beyond just the Registrar, Dr. Kingsley Agyemang.
During an appearance on JoyNews’ Newsfile show, Mr. Dafeamkpor explained that the root cause of the problems lies in the unequal distribution of public funds within the Scholarship Secretariat. He dismissed claims by the Auditor General that the GETFund was encroaching on the Scholarship Secretariat’s territory by awarding scholarships, stating that the law allows the GETFund to allocate funds to the Scholarship Secretariat for scholarship disbursement.
The South Dayi MP highlighted the lack of a substantive legislative framework governing the operations of the Scholarship Secretariat, calling for more accountability and transparency in the disbursement of scholarships. He pointed out that the Scholarship Secretariat operates as an extra-ministerial body under the Office of the Presidency, making it difficult for details of its activities to come to light.
In contrast, Mr. Dafeamkpor praised the fairness and transparency of the GETFund, noting that it prioritizes students based on their academic performance. He emphasized the need for consequences for individuals who misconduct themselves in public office, asserting that accountability and transparency are essential in the management of public funds.
