Sandra Seacat passed away on Wednesday in Santa Monica from natural causes while being surrounded by family.
She was a longtime acting instructor in New York and Hollywood whose pupils included some of the biggest names in the industry, including Andrew Garfield, Jessica Lange, Laura Dern, Harvey Keitel, Michelle Williams, and Common, to name just a few. She was 87 years old.
A family representative made the announcement of her death.
On October 2, 1936, Seacat was born in Greensburg, Kansas. After graduating from Northwestern University, she moved to New York City with just $69 in her pocket and the dream of becoming an actress.
There, she met Lee Strasberg, who accepted her as a member of The Actors Studio and later encouraged her to also teach.
In the US and Europe since 1975, Seacat has taught her own classes and workshops. Although she lived in New York and worked mostly in Los Angeles and New York, Seacat employed cutting-edge methods to encourage her pupils to give sincere, strong, and naturalistic performances.

Along with those already mentioned, Mickey Rourke, Marlo Thomas, Aaron Eckhart, Meg Ryan, Misha Baryshnikov, Isabella Rossellini, Melanie Griffith, Don Johnson, Mary Kay Place, Peter Falk, Shia LaBeouf, Martin Henderson, and many others all studied under Seacat at one point or another.
Her spouse Thurn Hoffman and loving daughter (and acting teacher) Greta Seacat survive her.
Later this year, memorials will be established in New York and Los Angeles. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Sandra’s name could be donated to The Actors Studio.
