Sammy Gyamfi, the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) national communications officer, has criticized Francis Asenso-Boakye, the Minister of Roads and Highways and Bantama Constituency Member of Parliament, for what he sees as false statements about the redevelopment of the Kumasi International Airport.

A video clip of an interview between Asenso-Boakye and prominent Star FM announcer Bola Ray is the source of Sammy Gyamfi’s criticism.

In the video, Asenso-Boakye asserted that the NPP government’s noteworthy accomplishment was the reason why Kumasi Airport is now an international airport.

Sammy Gyamfi counters that this is a lie and an attempt to hijack former President John Dramani Mahama’s legacy.

He gave a thorough overview of the airport’s renovation project’s history, pointing out that Phase 1 saw the airport become somewhat international in 2014 when it was finished under Mahama’s leadership.

Gyamfi also emphasized Phase 3, which was approved by President Akufo-Addo, and Phase 2, which was started by John Mahama and ratified by parliament in 2016.

According to the documentation, President John Dramani Mahama initiated a three-phase project for the redevelopment of the Kumasi International Airport. At a cost of $USD 29 million, Phase 1 of the project saw the construction of a brand-new 1,981-meter runway, the installation of contemporary instrument landing systems, and the provision of astronomical ground lighting to enable nighttime flights. “As a result, after Phase I of the Kumasi International Airport Redevelopment project was finished in 2014, the Kumasi Airport became an international airport, albeit to a moderate extent. Actually, in 2015, President John Mahama took the Presidential jet to travel from Vienna, Austria to Kumasi in order to meet with the Otumfour,” the author stated.

He underlined that Phase 1 of the project was finished under Mahama’s direction, hence the NPP government cannot take credit for turning the Kumasi Airport international.

He further said that we will not put up with the NPP’s attempt to usurp Mahama’s accomplishments.

Gyamfi further accuses Asenso-Boakye of failing to provide any significant examples of NPP projects that have been successfully completed in the Ashanti Region.
