On September 14, 1947, Sir Nigel John Dermot “Sam” Neill was born in Omagh, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. After moving to New Zealand in 1954, Neill’s family enrolled him in Christ’s College, Christchurch, an Anglican boys’ boarding school. He went on to study English literature at the University of Canterbury, where he got his start in acting.
After receiving a BA in English literature from Victoria University, he moved to Wellington to pursue graduate studies there. On the Australian chat show Enough Rope in 2004, the interviewer Andrew Denton briefly brought up Neill’s stuttering.
Neill has had important roles in both dramas and blockbusters during his nearly 50-year acting career. He is known as an “international leading man” and one of his generation’s most adaptable actors.
His first significant role came as a result of his performance in the 1977 film Sleeping Dogs. He then starred in My Brilliant Career (1979), Omen III: The Final Conflict, Possession, A Cry in the Dark (1988), Dead Calm, The Hunt for Red October, The Piano, and In the Mouth of Madness (1994), among other films.
