Sam Cooke was the sixth of Charles Cook’s eight children, a pastor in the Church of Christ (Holiness), and Annie Mae’s family. L.C. , one of his younger brothers, eventually joined the doo-wop group Johnny Keyes and the Magnificents.

Cooke had two marriages. Dolores Elizabeth Milligan Cook, a singer-dancer who adopted the stage name “Dee Dee Mohawk” in 1953, was the subject of his first marriage; the couple separated in 1958.

In 1959, Dolores was murdered in a car accident in Fresno, California. Cooke paid for Dolores’ funeral costs despite the fact that they were divorced.  Sam Cooke has a daughter named Linda Womack.
