Anderson was born in the North Dakota town of Wahpeton.
At the University of North Dakota and the University of Wisconsin, he earned a Master of Arts degree in American literature and creative writing. He taught drama at Antelope Valley College in Lancaster, California, in the 1970s.
Anderson is best known for his roles on Perfect Strangers as mailroom supervisor Mr. Gorpley, Angel’s first two seasons as lawyer Holland Manners, and Lost as Bernard. He is best known for his role as the school principal in Forrest Gump. He is also known for his roles as the assistant manager of the Hotel Royale in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode “The Royale” and as Mike Seaver’s antagonist Principal DeWitt on Growing Pains. In addition, he was a recurring actor on various episodes of WKRP in Cincinnati, playing a variety of roles, including an immigration officer in the episode “The Americanization of Ivan.” Anderson appeared as Walter Carmichael, a middle school teacher whose classroom becomes a crime scene when one of his students is kidnapped, in Season 8 of NCIS.
