Sade is the stage name of British singer Helen Folasade Adu, who is of Nigerian heritage. She was born in Ibadan, Nigeria, on January 16, 1959. She was well-liked and garnered a lot of praise from critics throughout the 1980s and early 1990s.

In her society, Adu was never addressed by her English first name, Helen. She was the offspring of an English nurse and a Nigerian economist.

Her parents shortened her Yoruba middle name, Folasade, to Sade. When she was four years old, her parents divorced, and she moved with her mother and younger brother to Essex, England.

At the age of 17, Sade enrolled in the three-year fashion and design program at Central St. Martin’s College of Art and Design in London. After college, she designed menswear and worked as a model.

She agreed to temporarily fill in as lead singer for Arriva, a funk band that her friends had started, and that was how she got into music. Later, Sade performed with the funk band Pride, but she soon quit to join the group that would later bear her name, together with Stuart Matthewman, Andrew Hale, and Paul Spencer Denman.
