Sade Adu is a Nigerian-born British singer who is best known as the lead singer of her own band. Sade is widely regarded as an influence on contemporary music and is one of the most successful British female artists in history.
Sade moved to Holland-on-Sea, Essex, with her mother when she was 11 years old. At the age of 18, she moved to London to study fashion design at Saint Martin’s School of Art after finishing her education at Clacton County High School and Colchester Institute.
Sade became backing up singer for British band Pride after completing a three-year course in fashion design and briefly modeling thereafter. Sade established a songwriting collaboration with Pride’s guitarist/saxophonist Stuart Matthewman at this time, and the two of them started performing their own sets at Pride shows while being supported by the band’s rhythm section.
Record labels became interested in her solo performances of the song “Smooth Operator,” and in 1983 Sade and Matthewman left Pride to form the band Sade with pianist Andrew Hale, bassist Paul Denman, and drummer Paul Cook.
