As a child, Peniston survived rhabdomyosarcoma, a soft tissue cancer, and had to have surgery to remove a tumor and chemotherapy. Cancer slowed his growth, and he was much smaller than his classmates until he was 16 years old. At 13, he moved to Nice, France to train at ISP Academy before going to college at 18.
