Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the weapons handler on the set of the movie “Rust,” has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for loading a gun that fired and killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.
Gutierrez-Reed was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter but was acquitted of tampering with evidence. This sentence is the maximum possible for her actions.
Actor Alec Baldwin, who also faces a manslaughter trial in July, has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him. Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer, who handed down Gutierrez-Reed’s sentence, emphasized the seriousness of her actions, stating that she alone turned a safe weapon into a lethal one, leading to the tragic death of Halyna Hutchins.
During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence that Gutierrez-Reed had brought live bullets to the set from her home in California, leading to the fatal shooting. They argued that her negligence and carelessness resulted in the death of a human being. Despite Gutierrez-Reed’s defense that she was not the sole person responsible, the jury found her guilty after deliberating for three hours.
Before being sentenced, Gutierrez-Reed expressed sorrow for the Hutchins family and friends but was criticized by the judge for not taking accountability for her actions. Hutchins’ mother and sister, speaking from Ukraine, emphasized the importance of justice and expressed disappointment that no one involved in the incident had reached out to them.
The trial also revealed that Gutierrez-Reed had failed to ensure that the weapon was loaded only with dummy rounds, as one of the live bullets ended up in the gun used by Baldwin. Her lawyer argued that she did not intend to bring live rounds to the set and blamed Baldwin for going off-script during the rehearsal.
Despite being found not guilty of evidence tampering, Gutierrez-Reed’s actions were deemed as a case of tragic negligence.
The film’s cast and crew paid tribute to Halyna Hutchins by completing the filming, with her husband serving as an executive producer.
